The difference between HYROX and CrossFit is the format. HYROX is a competition that's the same all over the world: 8 km of running alternating with 8 functional stations, against the clock. CrossFit changes the workout every day and combines weightlifting, gymnastics and conditioning, with more technical movements and broader physical preparation.

If you're looking for HYROX or CrossFit training in Figueira da Foz, it's natural to have questions. They're two of the fastest-growing ways to train in the world, they share the same foundation and they have differences that matter when you choose. Here's the side-by-side comparison and the answers to the most common questions.
What are the main differences between HYROX and CrossFit?
| HYROX | CrossFit | |
|---|---|---|
| Competition format | Always the same: 8 × (1 km run + 1 station) | Changes every race, the workouts are only revealed close to the day |
| Training in class | Varied, focused on race capacities | Varied, a different workout of the day (WOD) every day |
| Movements | Simple: SkiErg, sled, rowing, burpees, lunges, wall balls | Broad and technical: Olympic weightlifting, gymnastics, conditioning |
| Running | Central, 8 km in every race | Present, but not the focus |
| Main capacities | Cardiorespiratory endurance, speed, muscular endurance | Strength, power, speed, endurance, coordination, flexibility |
| Learning curve | Short, you start fast | Longer, the technique takes months |
| Duration | The race takes 1 to 2 hours for most people | The main part of the workout usually lasts 5 to 20 minutes |
| How you measure progress | By race time, easy to compare | Through many different tests, harder to sum up in a single number |
| Who it's for | People who like running and want a concrete goal | People who like variety and want to learn technique |
Competition
This is the most important difference. In a CrossFit competition, athletes don't know what they'll be doing: the exercises are varied, unpredictable and different every edition. In a HYROX race, the athlete knows exactly what's coming: the same 8 exercises, in the same order, in the same format all over the world. That means you can specialise and prepare for that specific race. We explain race day in detail in how a HYROX race works.
Variety and complexity of movements
CrossFit has a very large and demanding library of movements: gymnastics, Olympic weightlifting and power movements that take months of technical learning. HYROX works with simpler movements, which makes it more inclusive and easier to start.
Physical capacities developed
CrossFit aims for a broad balance of abilities: strength, power, speed, endurance, flexibility and coordination. HYROX puts more weight on cardiorespiratory capacity, speed and muscular endurance. In terms of overall physical development, CrossFit is more complete.
Running
In HYROX, running is a central part of training and competition: there are 8 km in every race, interspersed with the stations. In CrossFit, cardio is there, but running isn't the main focus.
Measurable progress
In HYROX progress is very clear: your race time is the number that matters, and it improves visibly over the months. In CrossFit it's harder to measure, because there are many variables and many different movements.
Is HYROX the same as CrossFit?
No. HYROX isn't CrossFit under another name: it's a competition in its own right, with its own rules and format. But the two sports share the same foundation:
- varied workouts, in a class setting;
- the same functional training methodology;
- high intensity, adjusted to each person.
That's why a lot of people who train one end up trying the other.
What are HYROX workouts?
HYROX is a functional fitness sport that combines running with strength exercises. HYROX classes are varied, just like CrossFit: each day brings a different workout, you don't run every day and you don't do the same stations every day. The goal is to develop what the race demands: cardiovascular endurance, functional strength and speed.
What has a fixed format isn't the classes, it's the HYROX competition. On race day, the format is always the same: 8 km of running split into 8 runs of 1 km, each followed by a station: SkiErg, Sled Push, Sled Pull, Burpee Broad Jumps, Rowing, Farmers Carry, Sandbag Lunges and Wall Balls. You'll find the loads for each station in the 8 HYROX stations, and the sport explained from scratch in what HYROX is.
What is CrossFit?
CrossFit is a functional training programme based on constantly varied movements performed at high intensity. The workout changes every day, it's called the WOD (Workout of the Day), and it combines gymnastics, weightlifting and cardiovascular conditioning. CrossFit's great strength is variety and community: you don't know the workout until you get to the gym, and that creates a really strong group atmosphere. More detail in what CrossFit is all about.
Is CrossFit harder than HYROX?
It depends on what you call hard. CrossFit is more demanding on technique: a snatch or a muscle-up takes months to learn. HYROX is more demanding on endurance: a race lasts much longer than a CrossFit workout and makes you manage your pace from the first to the last kilometre. In class, both adapt to your level, so neither is too hard to start.
What are the benefits of HYROX?
- Cardiovascular endurance: running and the stations train your heart and lungs at the same time.
- Functional strength: pushing, pulling, carrying and squatting, the movements you use outside the gym.
- A concrete goal: you know what's in the race and can train for it, with your time as the measure.
- Easy to start: simple movements and a short learning curve.
- You can compete in several ways: solo, in pairs or in a relay of four.
What's the difference between hybrid and HYROX?
Hybrid training is a way of training that combines endurance, such as running or rowing, with strength in the same week. HYROX is a specific competition that tests exactly that combination. All HYROX training is hybrid training, but not all hybrid training is HYROX.
HYROX or CrossFit: which is better for you?
None is best in absolute terms. The best one is the one that fits your goals and keeps you coming back the following week.
HYROX is for you if
- you enjoy running, but want more than just running;
- you prefer clear goals and measurable progress;
- you want to compete in a race with a simple format;
- you come from the gym and want a different, concrete challenge;
- you're mainly after endurance and aerobic capacity.
CrossFit is for you if
- you love variety and don't want to know the workout before you arrive;
- you want to learn weightlifting and gymnastics movements;
- you're looking for community and intense group training;
- you like varied competition, with no fixed format;
- you want to build strength, power, speed and endurance at the same time;
- you have the patience to learn technique over several months.
