What is HYROX

HYROX training
at the box in Figueira da Foz, with a real competition structure

HYROX is the fitness competition format that draws the most athletes worldwide. At Revolution Fitness you get approved equipment, the official methodology and coaches with specific training to prepare you properly.

Want to understand the format first? See the guide to what HYROX is.

Every HYROX session is led by a qualified coach and combines running with functional stations, building endurance, strength and work capacity in a progressive, structured way.

Whether your goal is finishing your first race, beating your personal best or simply having the most complete workout of the week, the programme is there for that.

Tiago Rodrigues - Coach Revolution Fitness
Tiago Rodrigues

Anyone who knows Tiago knows he loves to chill at home (yes, actually naked!), but inside Revolution he takes training very seriously.
A CrossFit coach with a CrossFit L1 certification and a specialisation in pregnancy and postpartum training, a real asset to our team.

Frequently asked questions about HYROX at Revolution Fitness

WHAT IS HYROX?

+
HYROX is a fitness race format with a fixed structure: 8km of running split into 1km sections, each followed by a functional station: SkiErg, Sled Push, Sled Pull, Burpee Broad Jump, Row, Farmers Carry, Sandbag Lunges and Wall Balls. The format is always the same at every race in the world, which means you can compare times with any athlete. You can compete solo, in pairs or as a team. The weights for each station change with division and gender, and they're all in the official HYROX loads table. The first station, the SkiErg, is one of the biggest time-losers for people without technique: check out the tips to improve your SkiErg and save seconds right from the start.

Is Revolution Fitness an official HYROX partner?

+
Yes. Revolution Fitness is a HYROX Official Partner Gym, with equipment approved by the organisers: official SkiErg, sled, Concept2 rower, kettlebells, sandbags and wall balls. Our coaches hold specific HYROX training and the sessions replicate real race conditions.

Do I need experience to start?

+
No previous experience is needed. The technique for each station is taught from the first session and loads are adapted to your level. HYROX preparation is designed to be accessible to anyone, and you start feeling the progress quickly. If you want to know in detail what happens in a session before you turn up, read what goes on in a HYROX class.

What's the difference between HYROX and CrossFit?

+
They're different, complementary formats. CrossFit changes every day and combines Olympic lifts, gymnastics and conditioning. HYROX always has the same structure: 8 km of running split across 8 stations, always the same ones, which lets you measure your progress from race to race. Lots of people train both, and some plans combine the two. The detailed comparison is in HYROX or CrossFit.

How many sessions a week are recommended?

+
For consistent progress, we recommend 2 to 3 sessions a week. HYROX training is demanding and needs proper recovery between sessions. If you combine it with other classes, the coaches help you structure a balanced week.

Can I take part in a HYROX race?

+
Yes, and that's exactly what the training is for. HYROX races take place in dozens of European cities throughout the year, including in Portugal. The Revolution Fitness programme prepares you to complete or compete in any official event. Before your first one, read our tips for your first HYROX race, with what nobody tells you before you compete.

What if I do not feel comfortable running?

+
No problem. In HYROX the running pace is entirely up to you: you can walk, jog or run. What matters is managing your effort so you can complete every station. Most athletes improve their running significantly with regular training.

Can you train outdoor running at the gym?

+
Yes. Revolution Fitness has direct access to outdoor running, so you can train the real race format, 1km of running before each station, without using treadmills. It's essential for replicating race conditions in day-to-day training.

HOW MUCH DOES HYROX COST?

+
We have three plans available: HYROX Open at 55€/month, CrossFit + HYROX at 70€/month and HYROX Race Prep at 75€/month. All of them have a 25€ registration fee and 12€ annual sports insurance on top. The first session is always free and with no commitment at all.

What should I bring to my first session?

+
Comfortable clothes and proper running shoes. All the HYROX equipment is available at the gym, so you do not need to buy anything before trying it. Your first session is free.
